Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity, and Culture (CSREC) at New Washington School of Psychiatry

Our Story

Founded in 2015, the Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity, and Culture was created to examine the powerful forces of culture, race, and identity that shape human experience – and to confront the psychological and societal impacts of racism, bias, and structural inequity.

Born from the belief that healing and justice are inseparable, the Center serves as a hub for critical reflection, professional training, and meaningful dialogue. As clinicians and educators, we hold ourselves accountable to examine our own assumptions and positionality – because these forces shape all of us, whether or not we’re aware of them.

Today, the Center is a vital part of the New Washington School of Psychiatry and a catalyst for institutional growth, education, and advocacy.

our mission

From awareness to action  – together

We are committed to promoting the mental health and well-being of all people by deepening our understanding of difference, intersectionality, and systemic inequity. Through experiential learning and rigorous study, we explore how identity – including race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, religion, class, age, ability, and other lived experiences – interacts with the therapeutic process and our roles as clinicians.

what we do

Turning commitment into practice

The Center champions our mission through:

  • Postgraduate education and training for clinicians, NWSP faculty, and the broader community.
  • Institutional advocacy to promote equity in recruitment, scholarships, mentorship, and programming across NWSP.
  •  Institutional advocacy to promote equity in recruitment, scholarships, mentorship, and programming across NWSP.
