Our Mission

The New Washington School of Psychiatry is a learning community.

Our mission is to provide education and training for mental health professionals and the community, focusing on psychodynamic and interpersonal thought and practice to improve mental health for individuals and society.

Our history

A legacy reimagined for a new generation of mental health providers

In 2023, a small, committed group of psychoanalytic psychotherapists in Washington, DC came together to found the New Washington School of Psychiatry (NWSP).

Their vision was sparked by the pending closure of the Washington School of Psychiatry (WSP) – and their determination to carry its mission forward.

Founded in 1936 under the William Alanson White Foundation, WSP was a pioneering institution with a bold vision: to explore how interpersonal relationships and the socio-cultural environment shape the inner world.

With Harry Stack Sullivan as its first president, WSP quickly became known for breaking new ground – launching the influential journal Psychiatry: Interpersonal and Biological Processes, founding more than a dozen training programs, and opening centers focused on aging, race, ethnicity, and culture.

NWSP now carries that legacy into the future.

NWSP offers a range of training opportunities: from single-day conferences and multi-week seminars to multi-year programs with both in-person and virtual formats.

We aim to deepen the conversation around how psychodynamic theory addresses the challenges of today – and to foster a multi-generational, inclusive home for clinicians committed to lifelong learning.
